Life - The 1910s were ntoexactly the best years for workers and the middle class. There were many labor unions, and the bad way things were going was underlined by the fire at the Triangle Waistcoat Factory, a disaster in which 145 women died. Children were hired to woek in unsafe and unsanitary conditions for long hours for little pay. Aminimum wage law was passed eventually, around the middle of the decade. Poverty and huner took priority to education, and a painfully low number of children went to school. Only about one third attended elementary school, and less than 10% graduated from high school. Women were fighting for the right to vote, and the first suffrage parade was held in 1910. They kept fighting for their right until the Nineteenth Amendment was finally passed in 1919. African americans were also striving for equality at this time.
The mass production of cars symbolized the 1910s, partly due to the Model T, and the country was prospering. The cuture started changing, which later led to the Roaring Twenties. People were dancing, listening to jazz, and buying tabacco.
Art and Architecture - Art was reconsidered during this decade, as artists began playing with diffrent styles and themes. Paintings now depicted not only the good, but also the bad aspects of life, and industrialization. Artists who painted the not-so-pretty parts of life were called Ash Can realists. Alfred stieglitz introduced photography as an art form.
Literature - Writers were trying to find their own style and make their writing original.Books like The Secret Garde, sons and Lovers, Of Human bondage, Wild Fire, and Tarzan of the Apes were among the most popular books. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse was the number one fiction book in 1919. Though it cost $1.90, which was expensive at the time, it still sold.

Women wore what they called the "Tea Gown" at home. As technology advanced, fabrics became lighter and there was a larger variety of brighter colors. there were lowered necklines and hemlines inched up to where the dress or skirt would show the woman's ankles. Dresses also had pockets, and head gear wa worn a lot. Furs were popular during this decade also. A lot of clohes were made in America after the war startes. The sack and sheath dreses were intoduced, along with oriental costumes, the harlem trousers, and the Hellenic tunic. Women wore their hair short, or "bobbed." Usually, men wore striped trouders, morning coats, white shitrs, and sometimes a top hat and frock coat, or black suits.
Music and Entertainment - Jazz was introduced in the 1910s and was mainly performed by African Americans, together with raftime anf blues. People enjoyed piano music. They liked to listen to music and dance, so most fancy restaurants included a dance floor. People also enjoyed bicycling and the theatre. Tennis was a popular sport, followed by track and field. In general, more sports advanced and moved toward professionalism, and some players asked for higher salaries. The first modern Olympics took place in 1912, in Stockholm, Sweden, and although Swedish athletes won the most medals, Americals performed well, especially in track and field, swimming, cycling, and shooting.
